|MAINLINE DENOMINATIONS CONTINUE TO DROP OUT OF THE CHRISTIAN MAINSTREAM|
According to the recently released 2006 Yearbook of American and
Canadian Churches only 3 "Mainline" protestant denominations remain
among the ten largest denominations in the United States. These are
the United Methodist Church, The Evangelical Lutheran Church and the
Presbyterian Church U.S.A. The fastest growing denomination of the
top ten in the U. S. is the Assemblies of God. Even these membership
statistics do not account for the large disparity between mainline
church membership numbers and actual worshippers remaining in active
fellowship with their churches.
The UCC is the loss leader by a wide margin. At # 21, the United Church of Christ, reports 1,265,786 members, a decrease of 2.38 percent. The PCUSA lost 1.60 percent and the Episcopal Church lost 1.55 percent of their respective memberships. The growth leader was the 24th ranked Orthodox Church in America with 6.40 percent increase.
